A medical transport jet carrying a child patient and five others crashed in Philadelphia Friday evening, creating a massive fireball that engulfed nearby homes. The plane, a Learjet 55, was operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance and was en route to Springfield, Missouri when it crashed just minutes after takeoff.
NTSB Investigation Underway
The FAA confirmed that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation. Authorities are working to gather information about the cause of the crash, which took place near the busy Roosevelt Mall in the Rhawnhurst neighborhood. Local authorities confirmed that several homes and vehicles were damaged by the fiery wreckage.
Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene
Witnesses reported hearing a loud roar followed by a massive explosion. Footage from a doorbell camera captured the medical jet plummeting from the sky, followed by a towering plume of smoke. “It felt like we were under attack,” said local resident Michael Schiavone, who described the explosion as “like a mini earthquake.”
Governor Shapiro Offers State Resources
Following the crash, Governor Josh Shapiro expressed condolences and pledged state resources to assist in the recovery efforts. Former President Donald Trump also shared his sympathy, calling the incident “so sad” on Truth Social.
